Abstract
This article examines some of the technical access barriers that inhibit the effective use of the information resources available today on higher education networks; the emerging information server technology that promises to alleviate many of these access problems; and the growing popularity of the Z39.50 protocol, including some questions that remain about this information retrieval standard. A sample list of Z39.50-based projects is offered.
